Labor Rally Today

With the Assembly reportedly near agreement on a compromise that could move stalled Indian gambling compacts to the finish line, organized labor is planning a show of force at the state Capitol Tuesday.

Leaders of UNITE HERE, the union that has been largely frustrated in its efforts to organize California's growing casino workforce, hope to bring 500 or more friends and followers to Sacramento to rally for a fight some believe already may be lost.

Special interests usually don't go to the trouble of coordinating large demonstrations if they're getting what they want. And insiders say Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, recently delivered bad news to labor -- an emerging compromise will not make it any easier to unionize Indian casinos.

Still, many will be watching to see who shows up Tuesday. One union that won't be there is the California State Firefighters' Association, which supports the pending compacts for five tribes, including Sycuan of El Cajon and Pechanga of Temecula.

The firefighters are paid out of the strapped state general fund, which would receive an infusion of several hundred million dollars a year from the new deals.
